The Benefits of Routine Pruning For Your Trees and Landscape

Trees are often famed for their longevity; however, most trees—especially those on commercial or residential properties—require regular maintenance to ensure a healthy and long lifespan. One crucial aspect of maintenance that should not be overlooked is routine pruning. Pruning benefits the tree in a variety of ways and encourages healthy growth while enhancing longevity.

Crown thinning is an important act taken when pruning mature trees with crowded or overgrown limbs. Over time, as trees mature, their canopies can become dense and congested with branches competing for sunlight and space. These heavy, crowded canopies also block sunlight from reaching the base of the tree, possibly interfering with landscaping plans. With this technique, the tree’s canopy is assessed and crowded limbs are strategically removed. By doing so, the canopy is thinned increasing airflow and sunlight penetration for the tree and any plants growing below at the base of the tree. This encourages new growth for the mature tree and reduces heavy shade at the trunk, thus allowing grass and plants to grow at the bottom. Pruning these crowded limbs encourages new growth in mature trees and for the plant life below.

Improved airflow within the canopy also reduces the risk of disease and pest infestation. Crowded branches create a humid climate that can harbor fungal growth and attract pests. By thinning out the canopy, we create a more open and aerated environment, reducing the likelihood of such issues. In turn, this also reduces the risk of limb failure as healthy, strong limbs are less likely to break in during storms or high winds.

Pruning is not only an essential practice for mature trees but young trees benefit as well. By strategically pruning developing branches, an arborist is able to guide a tree into growing one strong, sturdy trunk. This not only increases the tree’s visual beauty but also its long-term vitality. Along with this, pruning at this stage allows for the removal of potential abnormalities. This then prevents dangerous growth patterns with quick and easy corrections in the young tree. Through careful and strategic pruning practices, our arborists can encourage the tree to grow to its full potential and invest in your yard's beauty and safety.
